Be Safe! {Emergency Kits}

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone on the East Coast dealing with the weather right now.

Having an emergency kit is essential in case the unexpected happens and you are without modern conveniences. Ideally, an emergency kit should be able to last you for 3 days. Keep your emergency kit in a secure waterproof container that you can move. I've made a list of essentials to have in your emergency kit. For more information, visit www.72hours.org for a complete list and how to make an emergency plan. Stay safe!

What to Have in your Emergency Kit
  • Water {at least 1 gallon per person, per day}
  • Food {Items that are shelf-stable. Keep in mind any food allergies or restricted diets. If canned goods, remember a can opener}
  • Eating Supplies {plates, eating utensils}
  • Complete First Aid Kit
  • Important Documents {and important phone numbers}
  • Extra Clothes {warm clothes, rain gear}
  • Working Supplies {work gloves, duct tape and utility knife}
  • Personal Hygiene Items {toilet paper, hand sanitizer, feminine products, soap}
  • Blankets & Sleeping Bags
  • Plastic Bucket & Heavy-Duty Trash Bags {waste and sanitation}
  • Items for Children, Elderly, and Pets {medications, formula, food, supplies}
When disasters happen, you rarely have time to run around remembering all the items that you need. Put your emergency kit together and have it there so you'll be prepared.

  3. Hi! I'm a new follower from the Fun Tuesday Hop! This post really hit home for me. We were on vacation at the beach when we were evacuated because of Irene's imminent approach. It was insane--I have never seen my family move so fast... we ran around, frantically throwing whatever we could find into random bags, even taking wet laundry out of the washer halfway through the cycle and throwing it in a garbage bag so we could get out of there before the disaster hit. It was crazy.

    Then we got home and my husband raced around, caulking up weak spots on the roof and moving anything that might be blown away inside the house. We even debated sleeping in the basement in case a tree were to fall on the house, but then we rejected that idea in case the basement were to flood.

    It was just a really scary time. But fortunately our area didn't take as much damage as we'd initially expected, and all is well now.

    You have a beautiful blog! Hope you can stop by mine sometime and return the follow!

    Smiles, Jenn
